Review: Goddess Interrupted [Book 2]

Do not read if you haven't read the first book in the series, The Goddess Test.

Goodreads Summary: Kate Winters has won immortality.

But if she wants a life with Henry in the Underworld, she'll have to fight for it.
Becoming immortal wasn't supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she's as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he's becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate's coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.

As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.

Henry's first wife, Persephone.

Just like the first book in the series, The Goddess Test, Goddess Interrupted was impossible to put down. Seriously, I only set this book aside when I was pretty much ordered to. It's that easy to get lost in and that hard to come out of. [Made even better by the fact that I was able to read the books back to back! I'm pretty sure that all series are made better by this...]

The one thing about this novel that I absolutely positively loved [okay, okay, I loved a lot about this novel] was the fact that Kate didn't immediately become all powerful upon becoming immortal. Yeah, she couldn't be easily killed but she was still fragile. She didn't spontaneously become a force to be reckoned with, unlike the others she could still feel pain, and a lot of it. She didn't have full control of her powers immediately or even know what they were. Nor did they all hit her at once. It was gradual and by the end of the book she still isn't full strength or really able to keep up with the others because unlike them she hasn't been immortal for eons...she's been immortal for less than a year. And I just LOVED this because it was so realistic. And just so brilliantly done. And just yes. Bravo.

Also, my wish for getting to know more about the history of the others [AKA the gods and goddesses or the family as they're often referred to in the series] was granted. You get more background! And not a bit of it in info dumps. Rather it was revealed through little gossiping sessions or explanations given to Kate as to why a character was doing something the way they were, etcetera. It was just handled really well. The whole novel was to be honest. It just felt really realistic. Kate wasn't given all the answers, becoming immortal didn't magically sole all of her problems. Including how to handle her love for Henry and their subsequent relationship. As well as dealing with the rest of the cast of characters whom she now has a life with.

To sum it up, Goddess Interrupted most definitely does not suffer from the dreaded second book in a series syndrome [AKA when it really just reads like a filler book to get you from book one to three] and in fact, it's better than the first. I can't wait, literally cannot wait as soon as I'm done typing this I'm jumping in, to read the third book in the trilogy because I HAVE to know what comes next. I HAVE TO!

5/5

  1. So glad you're loving the series! This might have been my favorite book. Completely agree about getting to read books back to back--or at least close together!
