Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Unread Books on My Bookshelf

Top Ten Tuesday is a Meme created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

I really wish I was home right about now, for multiple reasons, but at this specific section just so I could take a picture and show you my beast of a TBR BOOKCASE. That's right, it's not taking up mere shelves now, it's dominating an entire bookcase. Books are stacked to the heavens.

(1) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling - I had been doing really good on this series up until The Incident. This book has set on my shelves almost since we bought it and my normally non-reader friend devoured it, then when I asked how the book was proceeded to tell me that one of my favorite characters died in it. UH WHAT?! I know I need to do a re-read of this series (everything is all mixed up in my head at this point!) and finish it off but I just keep putting it off for that very reason.

(2) The Heroines by Eileen Favorite - I remember seeing this book in Sam's Club, reading the back cover, seeing all of my favorite heroines from classic literature as having parts in this and soon after driving my Mom crazy for it. She bought it for me. At the time I was reading something else so I put it on my shelf to be read next, upon finishing the one book I came back to it, reread the back cover and decided that I need to read ALL of the books that Eileen Favorite drew heroines from in order to do it justice. Hence the reason I still haven't read it after all of these years.

(3) Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell - This particular lovely came from a Waldenbooks inside the mall, way back when I was still a little girl. Did I mention I was a little girl with a college reading level? Oh yeah. I was constantly needing to be challenged when it came to my reading, I would devour the books that the rest of the children my age were reading in a mere couple of hours if that. I'm still not entirely sure what drew me to this particular book. All I remember is wanting this particular book, I even carried it around the store clutched to my chest as my Mom tried to shift my attention to books that she thought would be more my style. But I held strong and it came home with us. AND NEVER READ IT. Which I think makes this book the oldest on my TBR list.

(4) Fable: The Balverine Order by Peter David - I love video games. I love reading. It's pretty obvious how this book ended up on my shelf, right? In all honesty until the past year I didn't even know that there were books written about video games in existence. My jaw dropped when I saw this on the shelf and I absolutely had to have it. I JUST HAD TO, PEOPLE. I still haven't read it though. Or beat Fable 2 for that matter. I kicked the third one's butt though. Oh yeah.

(5) The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory - Oh the shame in this still being on my shelf. I WAS ALMOST FINISHED WITH IT. It's about some of my favorite royals. Okay, so Elizabeth and Mary are my absolutely favorite but Anne and Mary are awesome too. Anyway. I was reading this with a friend of my ex-boyfriend and we were doing good, reading it, discussing it, planning on seeing the movie. She finished. I didn't. I have no idea what made me set this book down. I was loving it. But set it down I did, and since it wasn't finished it got put right back into the TBR pile. And has now sat there for several years.

(6) The Lost Gate by Orson Scott Card - Ah, the first book I ever won in a giveaway...and by one of my favorite authors to boot! I absolutely loved Orson Scott Card's Enderverse. LOVED IT. Ender's Game is one of my absolute favorite books EVER. I was so excited for this book, I ran down to the mailbox daily to see if it had arrived, I could not wait to read it. And yet I have. In fact I've been waiting since...January maybe of this year. That's when it says it was added to my Goodreads.

(7) Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card - This is the first book of the companion series to his Ender books. I have the entire series. Yet I keep avoiding this book. I think part of me, despite the rave reviews everyone has given it and the fact that most people liked this series WAY better than the direct sequels to Ender's Game, is afraid that it will ruin my favorite book for me. So I avoid it.

(8) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams - I have heard so many great recommendations for this book, I don't know why I haven't read it yet. I scooped it up at one of my library's bag of books for a dollar sale [which the next one is the weekend after Thanksgiving!!!] then put it on my shelf and forgot about it. After you know, fighting over it with my boyfriend who loves the cover of the one I got.

(9) Nylon Angel by Marianne de Pierres - I was so excited when I found this book and it's sequel at my library bookstore, I got them both for a dollar! It was a crazy coincidence because a friend had just been raving about them before I had hit up the bookstore. On top of that you guys have seen my posts about desperately wanting Burn Bright [by the same author] to come to the US. Yet I haven't read those books by her that I actually have. I'm so hanging my head in shame right about now.

(10) Once a Princess: Sasharia en Garde by Sherwood Smith - Crown Duel [by the same author] is without a doubt, never moving from my top five books. It's quite possibly my favorite fantasy, it frequently dukes it out for this spot with Trickster's Choice by Tamora Pierce. Anyway. I have read the first chapter of this book on my Kindle about a dozen times. I love it each time. I love the author. I love the premise. Yet it keeps getting set aside. NO IDEA WHY. I really need to remedy this.

Here are my top ten, what are yours? See anything that I just need to bust off the shelf and start reading? TELL ME PLEASE! :o

  1. I've been wanting to read more Elizabeth Gaskell, too. I read her collection of short stories last year and really enjoyed her writing. Good for you for picking it out so young ;)

  2. A collection of short stories? Maybe I should pick one of those up and work my way into Wives and Daughters.

    Thank you! :]

  3. Elizabeth Gaskell's North & South is one of my all-time favorite books, love love LOVE it.

Wives & Daughters = much slower. Also a bummer on how the end ends up working out because she died before actually finishing it (although most editions contain notes on how she planned on doing so). I still definitely enjoyed it though, but would definitely say N&S is much more worth your time.

  4. The Other Boleyn Girl was my introduction to Philippa Gregory - I love her historical nvels, but this one remains my favourite of hers. HHG2TG is a classic!

  8. I was saving it for this winter break so I wouldn't have to lug them back and forth between home and my dorm room. But they are pretty high on the list these days. :]
