Review of Overprotected

My review of Overprotected by Jennifer Laurens is based on a copy of the book that I won from Mandy of twinmom101‘s blog. The following review is my honest opinion of the work.

Goodreads Summary: "Ashlyn: A lonely society princess living in New York City.

Daddy hired you to be my bodyguard.

Colin: Childhood enemy, now her protector.

Daddy thought I’d be safe. He thought I’d never fall in love. He thought he could keep me forever.

Charles: obsessed with keeping her safe, keeping her his, he hires the one person he knows she could never fall in love with: Colin.

Daddy was wrong."

I spent pretty much all of the novel wanting to throttle Fiona, Ashlyn's mother. Most annoying woman on the face of the planet. This line of hers particularly did me in, "Good. I don't approve of feisty behavior. We simply do not allow it". But while she annoyed me to no end Ashlyn's father gave me the creeps. Who acts like that? I can understand to some extent his motives for hiring bodyguards but his mannerisms and everything seemed just as off-putting as some neurotic kidnapper.

In the beginning Ashlyn annoyed me too though the more I thought about it I realized that she was supposed to; they treated her like a child so she acted like one. You can't expect anything else and it made the change she made with Colin that much more dramatic. Upon coming to this realization I really began to enjoy the character, even after I also realized that we were a lot alike in many ways...though I've never been that overprotected.

I'm a big music person, in fact I don't think it would be possible to survive without some kind of soundtrack going. The fact that this book tied in music so well that I could almost hear it made it that much more powerful in my opinion. There's something so sensual about music in general that it's perfect for a love story.

The story itself was a captivating one, and as an only child I was able to relate completely to the idea of being overprotected (though as I stated before my parents never went to these extremes). I find myself getting so lost in the characters that Jennifer Laurens has created; they come to life for me and I genuinely feel for them as the plot progresses. She tells such a great story that I can see playing in my head cinema-esque as I read the words on the page.

What do all of these strong reactions mean?

I'm giving Overprotected by Jennifer Laurens a four out of five stars review. It took a chapter or so but I found myself really getting into this novel, I couldn't put it down until I reached the end and even than I wanted more. It was a great story and I really enjoyed the development of the characters involved.
