Review of Spellbound

My review of Spellbound by Rachel Hawkins is based on a hardcover copy of the book that I purchased for myself. The following review is my honest opinion of the work.

Goodreads Summary: "Hailed as “impossible to put down,” the Hex Hall series has both critics and teens cheering. With a winning combination of romance, action, magic and humor, this third volume will leave readers enchanted.

Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident.

Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before it’s too late?"

OMGWTHBBQ RACHEL HAWKINS!!!

Okay. Now that I've got that out of my system.

I have love/hate relationship with Spellbound. I loved Hex Hall, Demonglass AND Spellbound. Rachel Hawkins is an amazing authoress who has written some amazing books with some seriously kick-butt characters. But I also kind of sort of hate Spellbound. It's intense, this relationship that we have. I can't tell you why I have these warring emotions, would hate to ruin the book for you after all, but they do in fact exist. So there you have it.

I hope if I ever find out that I'm some sort of demon that could totally be used to take over the surrounding universe that I can be half the smart-a** that Sophie is. Oh, and you know, maybe some of the power. That would probably be more helpful and almost as much fun.

Sophie really comes into her own in Spellbound; instead of just a smart-mouthed girl you start to see her as a young woman with the power to change everything in her world. You see her loyalty to her friends and family, even those that she doesn't allow into either of those intimate groups. She wants the best for everyone. You also see her as a human, she's a fully developed character. I love Sophie because even with all of her strengths she still has her weaknesses, she gets scared or confused because no one is perfect.

Archer is back, snarkier than ever alongside Cal who is ever so dreamy. AND there are tons of new characters as well as a returning cast of other Hex Hall favorites. I'm giving Spellbound by Rachel Hawkins a five out of five stars review. This is a must read for fans of the previous two books and for those of you that haven't yet, why are you even reading this review?! Go now! Go forth now and get them! You definitely won't regret reading this series.

  1. Really enjoyed this third book, too. Like you said, it felt like Sophie really matured, but kept her smart-a** personality intact, despite the trials she went through.

I had a bit of a love/hate issue with it, too, but I still couldn't put it down. Thanks for sharing your review!
