Review of Die For Me

My review of Die For Me by Amy Plum is based on a hardcover copy of the book that I won through a giveaway. The following is my honest opinion of the work.

Goodreads Summary: "In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.

When Kate Mercier's parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life--and memories--behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.

Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he's a revenant--an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again."

Kate and Georgia reminded me a great deal of my favorite cousin and I, while I couldn't say we were brought up as sisters [technically we aren't even "related"] our mothers were insanely close and we did a lot together. We're Yin and Yang. I'm the introvert and she's the extrovert. Occasionally she would try to bring me in, was always sweet about it and all inclusive but it was never quite my world. I was always happier with my books, wandering on my own, I'm so a Kate to her Georgia. I think this is why I loved these sisters. I felt like it could have been my story. If, you know, my cousin and I had been sisters and shipped off to Paris.

Vincent, Kate's love interest, was the absolute in boyfriends however he had some severe competition for this reader's heart when Jules arrived on the scene. He's such a charmer. I always fall for them. Vincent was sweet and dreamy, everything a book boyfriend [or real one for that matter] should be but when Jules was around he just completely stole the show. Comparatively it was like wandering around with a candle then suddenly having the room alit with LED lights. One is comforting, classic and definitely romantic whereas the other is just captivating and you cannot look away.

As for the novel itself, I was completely swept up in the story. It took me a couple of chapters to sort of feel it out but as soon as I did I was hooked. I just kept flipping pages, I had to know what came next. The romance, the action, the understanding of what was really going on and what was truly at stake for the characters just kept me going. There was so much! Amy Plum did a fantastic job at weaving her story together.

I'll admit I was slightly disappointed, just EVER SO SLIGHTLY, by the fact that this wasn't the romantic zombie book I was expecting when I first heard about it. On the zombie part I mean, the romance was there and THEN SOME. But overall I'm giving Die For Me by Amy Plum a five out of five stars review and already plotting how to get its sequel on my pre-order list without breaking the bank.

  2. I wouldn't have gotten that the story is about zombies from that blurb... I wanted to read it at first, but I'm not sure about zombies..

  3. Arianne, the undead thing and some pre-publication press from a couple bloggers made me think it was about zombies which originally made me want to read the book. Unfortunately it wasn't about zombies.

As in there are NO zombies.

  4. I love when you can directly relate to the relationships in books. It makes it an even more special experience. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I hope you can read the next one soon. I know, the zombie thing was a big bust and I don't know why people jumped on that. A tiny, yet ongoing joke within the book turned into zomg, ZOMBIES! No. It has nothing to do with zombies and I feel bad for all the zombie fans who were disappointed.

  5. Me too! Like you said, it makes reading the book a more special experience and its almost like you're part of it.

Same here. I mean, I get why that got out because it was a really funny ongoing joke but still. I definitely ended up liking it better when I read it as the immortal romance it was than a zombie story. so it all worked out in my case. :]

  6. Zombies are pretty awesome though, Arianne. You should give them a try some time. I highly recommend Carrie Ryan's book for a first time zombie venture. :]
