Review of Fallen

My review of Fallen by Lauren Kate is based on a hardcover copy of the book that I borrowed from my local library. The following review is my honest opinion.

Goodreads Summary: "There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret...even if it kills her.
"

I had expected great things from Fallen between it's devastatingly gorgeous covers and impressive fan base.

Luce wasn't my kind of heroine. She was weak and constantly torn between two guys despite constantly trying to convince herself [and the reader] that she wasn't. She wouldn't even own up to her own feelings. She was full of self-doubt and loathing. I had issues relating to her because I just wanted to grab her shoulders and give her a good shake.

Daniel never won my heart. For that matter neither did Cam. Cam seemed entirely too perfect, the kind of perfect where you know there is something horrible lurking underneath. Aside from the amazingly good looks that Luce went on and on about there never seemed to be anything particularly noteworthy about either male. Though by the end of the book Daniel had me considering him, I think that he could grow on me with another book.

What I did enjoy was Luce's girlfriends. These girls won my heart over completely, I loved the scenes where they made appearances.

Originally I was going to give Fallen a two because it was an okay read and didn't seem to be quite what I was looking for when it comes to a summer romance, even of the paranormal variety. But the ending has me reconsidering my original thoughts and thinking that I might have to pick up the sequel. I really enjoyed the ending. It had the fast paced drama that I had been hoping for over the course of the entire novel.

I'm giving Fallen by Lauren Kate a three out of five review.
